I forgot to mention yesterday that we have had a change of ward occupants. The Aussie lady was transferred to another part of the department. The new occupant is a vulnerable adult with visual impairment. It is really good to see the quality of gentle care that she is having from the staff.
This morning my blood sugars were 6.3 and blood pressure 106/55. Still need to drink lots of water. 9 tablets and then another 5 to have with breakfast.
Breakfast came and I had the usual bran flakes, bread roll and butter ( I gave the marmalade back. I did ask if there was any Marmite, but they don’t do that – just marmalade and jam). At this point I needed to ring the call bell as for some reason I had got myself into a funny position – diagonally across the bed, folded in half and with a leg dangling over the side of the bed. Danielle the night nurse asked if I was trying to escape!
After breakfast I had a nice bed bath and clean sheets and as it was Mady, we did the Thunderbirds manoeuvre and I got into a good position – back up and knees up.
Some work emails and stuff bothering Sian for help.
New lady in next door bed.
Ruth the senior sister came to see how I am getting on and I have a different catheter bag. Instead of the big plastic reservoir one, I have a leg bag – it is strapped to my leg below the knee and can be worn under trousers etc. . I just need to keep an eye on how full it’s getting. There is a bigger bag for night time. They have also asked the specialist continence nurse to come and see me.
Diabetes nurse came and discussed medication. I am not going to have glicazide in the afternoon, and the insulin formula is being changed so that I will have it twice a day at breakfast and supper, and it will be dual action, so a mixture of fast and slow release.
Into chair and lunch - orange juice , lamb pie with boiled potatoes and mixed veg, with an apple. Dr Taylor came at the same time as lunch, talked about the diabetes meds chamges and talked about the transfer to Swindon, which could be at any time in the next few days.
Then, just after 1, Mady came to say that they gad a bed at GWH and I would be going their afternoon. She said she’d be sorry to see me go, and we had a hug. She has helped with ( Ie done) my packing for me.
Dr Taylor came back and confirmed transfer, told me I would have a junior doctor “ clerking” me. I think this means taking the history again. I must make sure that they are aware of the change I the diabetes meds.
The bay is now being very closely inspected by a lady with a tablet who is checking the cleanliness of everything. She had to stand on tiptoe to check the top of the curtain rail!
I was sitting quietly in my wheelchair the bed stripped and all packed and waiting for the transport to Swindon when it got very busy around my bed. Julio arrived with Mum and Dad. What luck transport hadn’t arrived! Brian had known they wanted to come and see me before their holiday next week. Then Dr Leutte arrived and had a chat, and also spoke to Mum and Dad. Rosie the NMO team lady came back to give me some more leaflets. She had a chat with Julio. Tina and Mady also chatted with them and Holly the aux offered them a cup of tea.
I was given lots of presents from Mum and Dad including chicken drumsticks, perfume and a pile of bendy straws that Brian had liberated from Leigh Delamere!
I was really tired by this time, and a bit uncomfortable, so asked if I could lie on the bed. Bed sheet put on bed, my leg catheter bag was emptied and nappy changed. Whilst this was going on, Mady Holly and I exchanged dog stories and pictures. Holly has actually won a dog and owner look alike competition!
Later, when doing my bloods Mady said that her dog had been hit by a car when they were moving in at 11 at night ( she, boyfriend and dog had moved down from Scotland. It was 11 at night and although she’d got insurance two days before, the emergency vet wanted £1500 and they couldn’t get hold of the insurance company. Mady paid the basic “look at my pet“ fee, and took dog home. Next day, insurance company said there was a 10 day wait after treatment. Vet talked to insurance company; no problem and they may appear on the celebrity vet programme. Final bill was over £5k!
Supper arrived – corned beef salad, apple juice and cheese and biscuits.
Julio came back up from sitting with Mum and Dad and Brian and we are now just waiting. Bit of a dilemma for Sian – should she attempt to come to Oxford or not? Decision was to start out; we’d track her and let her know if she needed to turn around.
So I'm just waiting ...
