15th March - I'm not a geratric patient and no WiFi!

Tuesday 15th March

Well, nothing really happened after lights out. I didn’t manage to stay awake for either the whole of the news or Newsnight, so all good there.

Not a bad night. Woke several times but had a couple of mouthfuls of water each time and dropped off again.

Waking sugars 6.2 and bp 99/55.

Breakfast sugars 4.4 had breakfast – cornflakes, tea and toast (and half a little tub of marmalade as they brought it to me!) 22 units of insulin. I am a bit peeved as I have been shown how to do my insulin injections by the diabetic nurse, I had been perfectly capable of giving myself my byeduron injections before, but they still prime the pen and dial the dose. All I am allowed to do is the actual sticking it in me.

Bed bath and out into the chair. Sat for a little while, then the physios arrived. One I’d had before, one new one. There are a lot of them! We agreed to carry on with the core exercises and the three we’d done yesterday. It went quite well. I need a rolled up towel under my knee for one of the exercises; the physio leaves the towel rolled up, on my locker, but then it gets taken away when they do the bed change. So physio added a bit of surgical tape around  it and wrote “physio bed exercises” on it. We’ll see how long it lasts! They then did some standing exercises on the turnaid – I had to stand without resting my knees against the padded bit and lean. Couldn’t feel a thing! No idea where my feet or knees were. Didn’t feel very safe, but they were there closely monitoring me, so not too bad. I explained that I felt very uncomfortable if I was on the pumped up chair cushion (feeling uncomfortable is good, as at least a bit of feeling) but it was pressure that I felt. I couldn’t have the cushion inflating and deflating (see updates passim) as I slide off. They said I’d be better off with a normal pressure cushion, so they’d get one for me.

The nurse wrote me out  a list of my medication as I wasn’t sure what I was getting in all these tablets. When I checked the list, I found that I didn’t appear to be getting the vitamins that were prescribed last week, and that one of the reasons my blood pressure might be low is  because I was still being given high blood pressure tablets! I will query this on tomorrow’s meds round.

Foundation Dr came round, felt my pulse, listened to my back and chest and asked about movement in legs.

Pre lunch sugars 11 and bp 109/54.

Lunch Veg soup, egg mayo salad and a pear. Post lunch sugars 13.9

Back into bed at 2, and then Julio arrived with Earl Grey tea. More details of the cunning plan.

He sat for a while with me, we did some work stuff then he left to go back to office and more cunning planning.

*****too much info warning***
I had been dozing in bed, when I suddenly thought that I should check my catheter bag. This is a leg bag, strapped to your shin or thigh and designed to be discrete. Not only was it full, but it was overflowing and I had wet the bed.

So, asked volunteer who was seeing if everyone was ok to go and get aux or nurse. They came, emptied bag and got me out of bed into chair so they could change the bedding.

Ok now!
Having got me out of bed into the chair in a bit of a hurry, the  cushion had arrived but hadn’t been put on chair, so I just sat on the chair. This was around 4pm

Pre supper sugars 15.8. Had supper – pea and ham soup, gammon ham (!) and tomato sandwich and ice cream as no jelly.

Julio and Sian arrived and gave me the next chapter in the cunning plan, which involves the NMO unit at Oxford, who had been discussing me in they department conference today.

I had an illegal bite of Sian’s chocolate cake. They left at 8 and I was put into bed after a nappy change and clean. There is a very nice smelling cream they use to avoid nappy rash.

So, I ran out of WiFi last night and was a real pain to Sian trying to top it up. As I had the ridiculous idea that I might have been moving soon, I only bought a day’s worth (it’s either a day or a week or a month). I am going to have to tackle it again tonight.

My after supper sugars were 21.4, and my bp 105/65.

So, that’s it. E and M already started talking to, each other (well talking and answering randomly) and M is refusing to take her tablets. Nurse getting frustrated as this will mean she will be in pain later, and that’s when she gets loud and confused (the first night I was here they had to take her bed out into the corridor).

So, about to do battle with the WiFi top up. If I’m successful, you’ll get this soon; if I’m not, I’ll be cross and bothering Sian again!

WiFi top up was a nightmare. Sian says that it sounds like there was not enough IP addresses for the service, as it kept failing to connect (didn't get as far as the top up page), so I’m using my phone as a personal WiFi hotspot. Seems to be working!

Good night!
