Saturday 12th March
Well, I was right – nothing exciting happened before bedtime last night. It wasn’t a very good night – M was confused and frightened and shouting a lot, and E joined in. L was sick a few times. I listened to the radio and slept/dozed until woken up again at 6.
Pre-breakfast sugars were 10.2, so a bit higher than I would have liked, but no hypo. Blood pressure was good.
I had a change for breakfast Ready Brek and I added the last of the grapes. It was nice. 17 tablets plus the insulin –I’m going to start to rattle soon!
Had a wash and I completely threw the nurse when I asked if I would have a hair wash. She hadn’t had to do this before, so we discussed how it could be done. She didn’t seem keen on the bag and bucket method. In the end, I sat and leaned over a bowl on my bedside table and we poured over the water, then I shampooed it and then there was another clean bowl of water and a cardboard bowl for the rinse water. We got quite a lot of water over me and the bed, but it was before the body wash and sheets change, so it was fine. It wasn’t a brilliant rinse, but I feel so much better – not washing your hair for nearly a week is not good for morale.
We seem to have a flock of young volunteers on the ward today, and they brought my tea. One of the disadvantages of being on this ward is that quite often you get your drink in a plastic rather than a china one.
I was ready to get up and go into the chair, when they came with a big hoist. I explained that I use a turnaid but apparently it has disappeared. For the hoist, you sit on the edge of the bed, then they put a thick belt around your middle which is attached to the hoist. You rest your arms on arm rests with a handle at the end, and then this belt is attached to the hoist. They pressed the button to start the hoist, but nothing happened. Lots of checking. Still nothing. Called for help. Battery dead. Went to get new battery. Replaced battery. Still nothing happened. Some hitting, then it engaged and up I went into standing position. Into chair, settled in.
Lunch arrived, so I had to call for someone to do my sugars – 10.7. Lunch was a very nice salmon and dill potato bake (in a white sauce with peas and sweet corn in the sauce). Sauté potatoes and although I’d ordered peas I got boiled to death broccoli. I don’t like broccoli at the best of times – this was horrible. Banana for dessert but the tea was forgotten about.
Waited for ages to go back to bed, and eventually did at around 4. This completely buggered up the timetable – I am supposed to be in the chair for no more than 3 hours really and I was sitting for around 5. Then there wasn’t enough time to get up again for supper at 5.15, so I decided to stay in bed. Snooze and then do some physio.
Watched lots of tv (Vera, Master Chef Professional, etc) and gave up watching the rugby.
Pre supper sugars 22.9. Supper was corned beef sandwich, carrot soup and jelly (they found some!) I do miss the salads and possible hot meal for supper I had at Oxford.
Julio arrived – he’s had a bad day, but I had a good photo of him outside the back door with Carter (still some discussion about his name).
I rang Mum and Dad to say thank you for my present, and to see how they were getting on with the packing for their holiday. Dad is packed, and Mum was upstairs doing hers, so I didn’t get to talk directly to her. They are looking forward to their holiday.
Sian arrived with 3 Earl Greys. I was ready for a tea as not only was there none at lunchtime but there hadn’t been any mid afternoon either. I managed not to spill any of these!
Sian brought me a present, too – a new iPhone that is bigger than mine so that I can see things better on the bigger screen. She attempted to do the back up and down load, but it took ages, so she's taken it home to do.
Julio looked up the consultant that is looking after me here and we discovered that his name is spelt Mukherjee. He is a geriatric specialist, with a lead in Parkinson’s, so I am officially in a geriatric ward with a geriatric consultant. Not too happy – I have now wasted a week. Julio even unhappier.
Julio’s just left to go home and attempt to put Carter away by himself, and I have let my OCD kick in and arranged my table. There is a gap where the phone should be! I am also a bit hungry – supper at 5.30 seems a long time to breakfast at around 8. Not sure if there is going to be a bedtime drink, but it’s 8.30 and no sign of one, so I doubt it’ll be round now .
So, nothing more exciting due this evening, so I’ll end here.
