31st March - CCH - Walking! (of sorts!)

Not a bad night’s sleep. Woke up at about 6 when they came to do sugars, which were 5.5.
Dozed until breakfast, which was porridge toast and marmalade (again!). Breakfast was quite late (around 8:45) as we had a couple of new people so routine a bit delayed. This meant that I wasn’t washed and dressed when Stacey the physio came to get me.

She put my socks, trousers and shoes on, left my nightie on my top half and I went unwashed to the session. Concentrated on standing up to start with. Sat on bench, with table in front of me. Hands on bench, push up, take hands off bench and on to table, straighten up and stand straight. It is incredibly difficult when you can't feel your feet or knees, but need them to be in correct position. Then do same in reverse. Several times. The lovely physios had found a picture of a mini to put on the wall for me to look at! Then there was an e exercise where I had to stand up and then use what looks like a child’s stocking positioned to the side to make me stretch to the side whilst maintaining balance. Did that several times. Then practice with the walking frame, changing direction and everything! Didn’t quite make it back to the room, but managed a fair bit. Got wheeled back to my room.

Nobody came, so I decided to wash and dress top half myself and then tidied my chest of drawers.
Top drawer;
My mug that was a present from Juli that has my secret stash of salt, choc buttons (biscuits when I have them) etc.
My folder with all my NMO, insulin and other info.
My ward folder,
My exercise belt (not being used as much as it should be);
Earbuds (not being used now I’m in my own room);
Spare pens;
Leg straps for my day bag. I am getting quite a collection of these as they keep appearing, but they are being reused, so I don’t need new ones each day.
My blood sugar tester (for when I don’t get done by the staff)
And finally my purse.

Second drawer- not much.
My get well and Mothering Sunday cards - I did have them displayed, but they keep falling over
My little handbag.
It’s a fairly empty drawer.

Third drawer - clean nighties and t-shirts

Fourth drawer (that I can’t reach from bed)
Dirty clothes in bag,
Clean socks and trousers,
Slippers.

They are all very heavy drawers and the top one sticks, so they are quite difficult to open and close. Had a funny moment when trying to shut one As I was in front of it at an angle in my wheelchair. Stupidly, I hadn’t put the brakes on, so when I pushed, the chest of drawers went one way, and I went backwards the other! Must remember about brakes.

Care assistant finally got round to coming to see me, so we had a standing up wash of my lower bits, so that counted as another physio session as I had to stand for quite a long time. Nappy changed, also standing up. I remember trying to do that to a wriggly toddler who refused to lie down for a nappy change. I was easier as at least I stood still!

Pre lunch sugars 10.2. Lunch pineapple juice, ham salad and cheese and biscuits. Blood pressure 97/56.

Quiet afternoon. Looked at stuff Sian had found that I needed to look at for work, did some reading, some puzzles etc. Felt a bit clumsy, so didn’t do any knitting as the ball of wool always ends up on the floor, and I can’t pick things up.

Supper was also a bit late at 17:45. Pre supper sugars (actually mid supper sugars as  done by me as no one checked them) 12.9. Supper was minestrone soup, sausage in onion gravy, mash and mixed veg (again mostly broccoli) with another lovely crisp apple for desert. Despite my best efforts of spreading the small paper napkin over my chest, I still managed to get gravy on my t shirt!

Pressed the bell to be taken to loo. After a while, a nurse popped head round door and asked if I was ok, I explained I needed to go to loo, she was just taking a bedpan from the next room, but would be with me shortly. She wasn’t. Another care nurse came, I explained again and she went off to get cricket. I got to loo slightly too late, but a successful visit!

Sian and Juli arrived whilst I was in the bathroom and had to wait outside. When I came out and was in my chair again, we went to the drinks machine and then the day room. We talked about the visit from the stair lift man. All seems under control, it’s being fitted next week, but Juli needs to be able to get into the study to be able to, put an extension lead out to the stair lift.

Then we talked about work and Mum and Dad’s visit next week. We've still not had confirmation of time of appointment at Oxford, so I’ll have to ring them tomorrow. All too soon it was time for them to go, so back to room, watched MasterChef, Midsomer Murders and now the news, which is all very depressing,

I have been put to bed, but for some reason this nurse insisted on taking my wheelchair back to the wheelchair store. I can’t understand this – there is space in the room for it, it has my name on the handle and it’s a hassle when they go to get it in the morning. Oh well, who am I to question the rules? Perhaps they are afraid I’ll escape.

Had my night time meds, which now include an antibiotic as yesterday I had some blood in my urine. It’s been clear since. Night nurse didn’t empty my leg bag before attaching it to the night bag, so I suspect I’ll be disturbed at some point as it’s going to need emptying before the morning.

Shoutey man has been shouting very loudly all evening. All I can say is I’m glad I’m in my own room with a door, which muffles it quite a lot. I hope he shuts up when they turn the light off, but I doubt it.

So, goodnight!

30th March - CCH - Car training!

Another not vet good night, but ok. Morning sugars 6.4 followed by breakfast of porridge and toast and marmalade. I was a bit tired, but I was due an appointment with the occupational therapist at 9. She popped her head round the door at about 8:40 to say that they were one short, and would I mind if she didn’t come until later – probably around 10. I was very pleased to have extra time to doze! However, the care assistant then came to get me up, so I said the o t was coming to assess my ability to get washed and dressed. She went away again.

Dr Shaw, the neuro consultant based at Bath and in charge of the unit came in and we talked about my symptoms and my progress. She is keeping an eye on me and letting Oxford be in charge!

OT came and we managed the assessment, she was impressed bye ability to put my bra on (actually, so was I!).

We talked about what home was like, and how I was going to manage – she was also impressed by the fact that Juli had found a temporary stair lift.

Then we had an ongoing issue with the Oxford appointment . They had phoned to and asked if we could change it from 2pm to 10:30. The sister, me and various other people discussed to see if we could get me up, dressed, into the car and there in time. Decided we probably could if the night staff got me up. Then there was another call to say could we make it by 10. No, this was not going to be feasible, so ward sister left it to the ward clerk to ring and say 10:30 or 2, but not 10.  Not heard back yet (but later the clerk came to say that she would arrange a packed lunch for me – I didn’t mention that we had planned on a McDonald’s drive through!).

Pre lunch sugars 10.7. Had a lovely lunch of orange juice, chicken and ham and veg pie with boiled pots and sweetcorn, followed by an apple. I really enjoyed it. After lunch it was a quiet time until Sian arrived and we went to the Grapevine to do some work until 3 when Juli arrived for instructions on how we do the car transfer. We went back to my room to wait for the physios, and Juli told me about the home visit by the community occupational therapist. This had gone well (just as well, really after all the time Juli and Sian had spent over the whole Easter weekend tidying, cleaning and moving furniture!) They will lend me a ramp for the bathroom, but we will need to remove the bathroom door and put a curtain up for the time being. I will also have various other bits of kit to help – I will be allowed to use the kettle & the aga ovens, but I am banned from the top of the aga & the deep fryer!

Physios arrived and we made our way to the car park, where I repeated yesterday’s exercises with Juli watching. Unfortunately, he had a phone call, so Sian, me and the physios talked cars and Italian job, vintage tractors etc and were then joined by a bloke who was very apologetic as he had parked his motorbike at the very edge of the hatching. Physios said that was fine, there was plenty of room and we all chatted for a bit as he raced a few times on some of the tracks we have on the roof of the Mini. He said no one would believe him when he told them he’d talked cars and racing circuits with 4 women! Juli came back, and we did the exercises with him. We all decided that the banana board was a better option, with a platform step. They’ve given Juli a banana board, but we must remember the step next week.

Gave up and Sian, Juli & I came back to room, where chatted a bit more. Pre supper sugars not good at 22.8, even though the insulin has been upped to 34 units. We’ll see what happens. Juli and Sian left, and I waited for supper – soup, then salad and cheese and biscuits (now you begin to see the attraction of McD’s!). Toileted and back into my chair. M called in my room to ask if I had a small sherry she could have to help her sleep. I had to disappoint her.

Juli came back, love him and we went and got him his soup, then went and sat in the day room doing nothing until it was time to go. I sat and watched Masterchef, then Martina, my care assistant, came to put me to bed. She does this most nights now, and we have the routine down to a T  (although she does still have to remind  me to take my glasses off as I’m getting undressed in bed so they don’t fly off!).

Now in bed, having had confirmation from Juli that he had got home safely and what he was having for supper. So now, I am ready for the news and, hopefully, a good night’s sleep.

Good night! Love to all.

29th March - CHH - Progress!!

Usual sort of night. Didn’t sleep well, and it occurred to me at about 4am that it was because the care assistant had left the night light on when she left. Didn’t seem any point in calling her to turn it off at that point, so went back to sleep. Woken up at 7 for my morning sugars – 5.5. Slept on and off, listening to the radio until breakfast arrived at 8.30. Porridge and egg and bread roll again.

Got washed, dressed and up then sat for a little while in my wheelchair. I was concerned about how I am going to get to my appointment in Oxford next week, so rang them and left a voice mail message. I then spoke to the sister here and said I thought that if it was possible, the best solution as far as I was concerned was to be taken there by Julio in the car. Julie (the sister) agreed as it meant there was no panic about getting me back as it would involve two ambulances and it could be midnight before I was back. She would investigate.

She tried to take a blood sample, but no use as no blood came out even though she tried two different sites. Said that if the doctor wanted blood, they could do it themselves!

Then I was asked to go to the day room (deep cleaning a day later because of the bank holiday). I call this enforced socialisation! I joined a lady and gentlemen I hadn’t met before – The lady is P and she has had a stroke. Don’t know the man’s name, but P recognised him as the night time shouter. We talked about life here on Mulberry (I didn’t like to admit that I have a room to myself). She wants to go home (as we all do). She believes her stroke was brought in by stress – she had finally had to put her husband in a care home a few days before the stroke, and he had already been asked to leave one (he had kept a knife from his lunch and was trying to unscrew the window frame so that he could leave). It made me realise that actually I don’t have it very bad. However, she did say that she wanted to kill the shouting man!

We had our lunch in the day room. Shouty man had help being fed, I had a nice egg mayo salad (probably not a good idea, having had more boiled egg). P had a baked potato and cheese, and complained about the institutionalised food. I kept quiet. She had custard and one of her own desserts that they keep in the fridge for her. My dessert of cheese and biscuits failed to materialise. Never mind.

After lunch, more complaints from P about people's manners as man with no legs took control of the tv in the day room and was channel hopping without asking if anyone minded. I was quite relieved when P went  back to her room, as did I to be toileted. Some success. Just got back in chair, when I was collected by the physio.

When she asked what I’d like to concentrate on, I explained about Oxford. She asked what type of car. Neither the Jeep nor Sian’s Free Lander would be suitable as they were too high, but things got better when I mentioned the mini. Talked about the shape of the seats, cushions, other aids. We agreed to work towards being able to transfer from wheelchair to car and back again. I did some standing with a walking frame and sitting on the bench. So, I was able to go from sitting in chair, to standing with frame, to moving so facing other way and sitting down on bench, and back again,

Then it got exciting!! The physio has a Mini Cooper, so we made our way into the car park with various bits of equipment and she moved her car into a disabled space “it’s ok, we’ve got our physio uniforms and badges and you’re in a wheelchair – nobody will object!”. I then got from the chair into the car using a banana board  -  a curved plastic board that you put one end under a buttock and the other end where you want to transfer to so that it forms a sort of bridge. You then shuffle yourself along so that you are where you want to be. Worked beautifully. Then I did it in reverse to get back into the chair. I then did it again, this time by standing and using the frame. Worked! Got back into chair by same method. Tried again, but we had to stop for a bit because we were all laughing – my trousers are very long and I couldn’t move my feet as I was standing on the too-long bits of trouser! When I had had them tucked into my socks, we tried again and I managed to get into the passenger seat again. So, hopefully Juli can take me to Oxford. He has to come in with the car to be shown what to do, so hopefully that will be tomorrow.

Got wheeled back in and onto the ward. I then WALKED using the walking frame for about 3 metres. It was very slow, hard work – but I did it!!

Back in room, and had a cup,of tea and a little snooze as I was shattered. Woke up and then did the vat return – something I’d been putting off, but it had to be in by the end of the month. Chaplaincy lady called in and we had another chat.

Diabetes nurse came in and we reviewed the insulin doses. Evening one of 8 units seems to be working well (even with the odd chocolate button or 3), but day ones still high by supper time. She went and had a chat with her colleague and decided to increase the morning dose to 34. We will review it again on Friday.

Pre supper sugars 14.9 – not too bad. Supper was tomato soup, chilli and rice, cheese and biscuits. Was going to ask to go to loo, but Sian and juli arrived. Sian brought the stuff I had bought from the Book People (Mylo and Rosa’s Easter presents, a set of murder books that had been very cheap, a cookery book for Sian as a little thank you, and a glass kitchen protector thing for Juli as a present). I had also, in a fit of something, succumbed to the latest fad and bought myself some grown up colouring books (mainly because they were miles cheaper than other ones I’ve seen), but I forgot about crayons. They’ll have to come in tomorrow! Sian a bit miffed as having brought all this in, I asked her to take most of it home again! Juli also a bit miffed as having had to spend all Easter getting the house ready for the occ therapist visit tomorrow, is now going to have to empty my car of all the stuff that’s in it, including a gazebo, foldey chairs, my court folder and all sorts of things that live in there.

We had a nice visit, Sian again sorted something on the iPad out for me, and then they left to go home.

I was toileted again, went back in chair and watched  Bake Off. If anyone saw it, I was very impressed, but part of me was asking why would you do all that? Yes, the results were amazing, but how many people have taste buds that discerning? However, I will be watching  the rest of the series!

So, then Martina the aux came to ask if I was ready for bed. I was, so here I am. The night light is off, I’ve been watching Obama.

All in all, a good day. I am quite pleased with myself!

Goodnight.

28th March - CCH - Easter Monday - And a toilet success!

Not a bad night. Morning sugars 7.1, and had my nappy checked. Lay in bed as not very comfy – not only am I getting the pins and needles in my feet and legs, but they were also extending up my legs into my thighs. Also the strange feeling of my feet moving and floating. Also had a very tight feeling around my ribs, a bit like a very tight bra. Auxiliary staff came in with breakfast at about 8.30 – porridge and the boiled egg and bread roll appeared! I think I may also have ordered this again for tomorrow.

Nothing much happened during the morning. Cleaning staff came in and one I hadn’t  seen before as she had been on holiday. Heard all about it! She had been working here as a domestic for over 20 years as she likes the contact with the patients and seeing them progress until they go home. I must admit, I am very impressed with the standards of cleaning here. It is very thorough and frequent.

Two of the night staff have obviously been talking about me and my situation in the handover session (which is what they are supposed to do, I suppose), and it was suggested that Julio or I write a polite letter complaining about the lack of physio available at weekends and especially over this bank holiday, where there has been nothing for 4 days. As one said “ this is supposed to be a rehab unit, how can you have rehab with no physio”. As they pointed out, it wasn’t just me, but everyone here and all the other staff (nursing, and support staff) work 7 days a week!

Pre lunch sugars 12.8 (done by me as they seem to have decided they only need doing twice a day) and bp 115/58. Not bad at all. Lunch was really nice – salmon bake with boiled potatoes and green beans, followed by cheese and biscuits. After lunch I was toileted (technical term), but nothing happened, then back in my chair.

Sian and Julio arrived and we went down to the Grapevine for vending machine drinks, as there were lots of people down there, we came back so that Sian could help me wash my hair. We acquired some towels and went to the day room loo that has the hairdressing sink in it. Mission accomplished without getting too wet! Back to room, where Sian checked why I wasn’t getting my gmail emails  (turns out it was because no one had sent me any!). They still both look absolutely shattered, which when I saw the pictures of our bedroom that they have tidied and transformed, I’m not surprised. Julio said that he didn’t realise that I had so many skirts, and why didn’t I wear them? No answer to that, really!

Pre supper sugars had gone up to 20.1. Supper was mushroom soup and ham salad and I was given salt, pepper, and two sachets each of mayo and salad cream. I stashed one of the salad creams away in case I don’t get any tomorrow.

Juli arrived back, bringing a walking Easter chick, some chocolate buttons and my knitting. I will start doing knitting soon. Off we went to the drink machine, then into the day room. As we were both knackered, we mostly just sat.

Back to my room, just in time for Juli to leave before being thrown out. Toileted - success this time as I did a poo, and it was due to me rather than gravity, so that is real progress! I watched the end of The Wrong Trousers, then did the update. So, it’s now 8:30, so I shall wait to be put to bed for tonight.

Talk to you tomorrow, which should be a busier day than these lately – I need to investigate how I am going to get to Oxford for my appointment on 5th April (not convinced that the logistics will work). And I have a physio appointment at 1pm.

Good night!

Sunday, 27 March 2016

27th March - CHH - Easter Sunday and a few Chocolate Buttons!

Well, I did have a few chocolate buttons last night! Went to bed, watched tv and lights out about 10pm.

Not too bad a night – didn’t need to ask for more water as I was asleep most of the night and only needed a few gulps. The clocks went forward, which was interesting! Morning sugars 7.6, so that was good.  Had breakfast of porridge, toast and the treat of diabetic marmalade. I have changed my menu choice and ordered the boiled egg again, but not sure when that takes effect. We’ll see.

Washed (using the Sanex Sian had got me yesterday that gained the seal of approval from Sara-Jane, my day nurse!). Got up, and was toileted (a technical term!) with a result. Finished washing and dressing, then into chair. Not much happened. M wandered in at one point, said she was in pain and that she was going home. Luckily, she wandered back out again.

Pre lunch sugars 8.8 – this is looking good! Lunch was roast pork with roast potatoes and carrots, followed by a nice crispy apple. Once again, I was advised to lie back on the bed on my side to help with the pressure, so I did this and was watching the boat race coverage when Sian and Julio arrived. After a while, we decamped to the Grapevine, where we watched the men’s race on the big tv.

Back to the room, the J&S left. Waited for supper – sugars had shot up to 21.6 but I had already started eating supper, and I had had a biscuit with my afternoon tea. When it was meds time, the lates nurse asked what was going to happen to my meds when I got home (a discreet way of asking if I was sensible enough to do my own). I explained that pre NMO I was doing my own meds, but they had increased by an awful lot since I’d been in hospital. She suggested it might be a good idea if she went through them, explaining what they all were, which was which and that I recognise them. This was very interesting, because although I thought I knew which they all were, I had got a couple of them muddled up. She also said that I would be able to see any changes (for example sometimes they don’t have tablets of the right dose so you end up with more of a lower dose).

No soup for supper as they’d run out, so I had a turkey salad (with salt, pepper, sachet of mayo and sachet of salad cream) followed by cheese and biscuits.

Juli arrived back again, looking very tired. He brought some clean clothes for me, so we put them away. We decided that the day room was not an option as there were some people in there, but the lights were off and Juli doesn't like it very much, so we went and had our drink by the drinks machine, as Juli was telling me about all the tidying up he and Sian had done and he promised to be nice when the Occupational Therapist did her home visit on Wednesday. Sian had said that Mum and Dad had rung and said that they would like to visit again, probably with Brenda and Ivor. So we took a picture of the map of the hospital so that I could email it to Dad so that they could see where to park.

Came back to room, and had my bag emptied. Juli left and I was left on my own again. Man with no legs (must find out his name) wheeled past the door and popped his head in complaining about the quality of tv at the weekend and we chatted about the boat races and sinking. Then he wandered off again.

Rang Mum and Dad and had a nice chat.

So here we are again. Waiting to be put to bed, and more of the same tomorrow.
