9th April - CCH - A Quiet Day

Well, I did have a couple of visits from M and Mb wandering before I went to bed, then was put to bed at about 10, which seems a reasonable time. Listened to the Archers, then BBC 5Live and woke up to turn the radio off at about midnight.

Early morning sugars 4.6 (and that was with a few rich tea biscuits with the Archers and another when I woke briefly at 3). Back to sleep until breakfast. Bit of a lack of synchronisation – the tea trolley started at my end of the ward, and the breakfast trolley at the other. Result – I had my tea 20 minutes before breakfast. Never mind. Again, still no Bran Flakes or marmalade so had the fall back of All Bran and jam. Just as nice. Went to the loo, got dressed. Put on the nice top Mum and Dad had brought me, which will need a stitch as it shows quite a lot of cleavage and bra! Had several compliments about it.

Spent quite a lot of the morning thinking about what I would need when I go home, both in terms of new bedding (our current stock is a bit old, tired and tatty and I’d quite like to have some new, especially if I’m having carers in. Call it vanity!). Looked at a number of websites, decided the is no way I’m paying huge amounts of money, so settled for Dunelm which seems to have a wide variety of qualities and prices. I think that we will need a couple of fitted bottom sheets, a quilt cover and I’d quite like one of those v shaped pillows (and therefore a pillow case for it). I may also need a mattress protector but will wait until after the home visit and discussion of care plan/needs before ordering one.

I also had a look at a really good website that has a huge range of things for disabled and elderly people, some of which could be useful for Mum and Dad. I liked the bed rest (having occurred to me that I spend quite a lot of the time that I am in bed adjusting the bed rest rake). Have bookmarked the website. Mid morning cup of tea with 2 biscuits (they were just put on my table, I didn’t ask for them, so it seemed churlish not to eat them). Did a bit  of colouring, although it’s not my favourite pastime.

Pre-lunch sugars (by me) 15.9. Lunch was pineapple juice (not asked for; I drank a couple of mouthfuls but it really is incredibly sweet, so left the rest), pork and apple casserole (although didn’t find any apple) with boiled potatoes and green beans, followed by cheese and biscuits. I had an extra biscuit in that I raided the Cornish crackers Dad had brought. This meant I had a mental puzzle. Normally (note the ocd kicking in here!) I cut my bit of cheese into at least 16 little slices and then arrange 8 on each cracker (2 rows of 4). However, not only did I have an extra cracker, it was ROUND, so that was quite complicated!! Not sure if it helped or hindered the process that one of the cream crackers broke anyway, so didn’t have a simple solution.

After lunch, I went to loo – more success. I think me and my bowels are getting more reacquainted. Juli arrived (no Sian today as she had other things to do) so we signed out and went back to MIU (drinks machine still not mended). The cold drinks machine had been restocked, but with more not-really-good-for-you drinks and they were £1.20 a can/bottle. So we reverted to the 20p hot drinks machine. Came back and into the Grapevine, where I told Juli about my shopping research. We ended up buying a new quilt (after an argument about the size of the cover. Our bed is a super-King/emperor size but our quilt is king size and we use it sideways), a quilt cover, a fitted bottom sheet, a v pillow and pillow case and some clips for use when changing the cover. This should all arrive on Tuesday. There was some discussion(!) not only about size but patterns, material and design. It got a bit stressful at times! I didn’t mention the care stuff much as I think we’d had enough.

The Grapevine was full – it’s a shame they don’t stay open for longer at weekends as they would have done a roaring trade today. The next table got a bit annoying as they were playing dominoes. Do you have any idea how noisy shuffling dominoes is when they are plastic on a wooden table? Also, the shuffling seemed to take longer than the actual games – we couldn’t hear ourselves speak (which, to be fair, during the bedding discussions, probably wasn’t too bad a thing!). As we were sitting at the big table, where we were joined at one point by M, her daughter, granddaughters and partners. M came up and greeted me as if I was one of the family, and started talking. She was having a much better day today than yesterday. We all left at about the same time to come back onto the ward nearly at the end of visiting.

I watched the Grand National – no idea why, I had no knowledge of any of the horses or anything, and we didn’t have an office or family sweepstake as usual (or at least if we did, nobody told me about it!) but it’s something that you do, isn’t it?

Pre supper sugars 20.9. Supper mushroom soup (not brilliant – I keep saying I won’t have it again, but mean it this time) then a really nice ploughman's. Apple for dessert – not the nice crispy ones, but a bit soft and tasteless. Tea arrived at an appropriate time! I watched tv and saw the first ever episode of New Tricks.

Juli came back for his second visit and brought all the stuff I’d asked for – Sanex shower gel (staff get through an awful lot of it when washing me or am I jus miserly with it?), toothpaste, socks and rich tea biscuits. He’s brought me a big double pack, so there’s not much chance of discreetly hiding then in my drawers! I don’t eat a lot of them, but they are nice to have in reserve. We went through the scary corridor (bit like going through the wardrobe to Narnia) to the drinks machine. Quite a lot of people in the waiting room of the MIU/out of hours doctor. We videoed the journey back along the deserted corridors. I think Juli may put it on Facebook. Into the day room which we had to ourselves, and more chat and just sitting. Juli had bought some beef at the butcher’s this morning, so had marinaded it and put it in the oven before he left. I hope it’s ready when he gets home, but you never know with the Aga.

Visiting ended too soon and off he went. I rang the bell for the loo – more success. At this rate, I really don't think I need the senna, so shall discuss this tomorrow.

M not wandering so much, but Mb is constantly up and down the corridor with an escort. She looks into my room frequently, I smile, and the she is diverted back along the corridor.

Not sure what I shall watch at 9 – I need to look up the TV guide. Or I might just read.  Or do puzzles. Or a jigsaw puzzle – there are no end of the possibilities! Staff shift changeover and many pop their heads around the door to say goodnight, which is nice. That’s all for now.

Goodnight!
