18th April - CCH - More Physio

Last night was fairly uneventful. Rang bell just after 10, went to the loo (not very successful) and settled. Ate fewer biscuits but more buttons. Woke a few times during night, had a drink, moved around and changed position and went back to sleep.

Had nether regions washed and nappy changed at 5.30. Dozed until 6.30 and sugars – 7.7. Dozed again, listening to radio until got sat up for breakfast at 7.45. Breakfast (the usual, but had the marmalade already spread for me), and meds. Mentioned that I hadn’t had my bloods done last week, and Sherley said she’d make a note and tell the doctor, then stayed in bed waiting to be got up.

And waited.

Watched tv until care assistant came at 11.30 to get me up.

***too much info warning****
What I thought had been farts had actually been a bit more. It took some sorting out and washing and creaming, but it got done.

***ok now***
I had again managed my feet and legs, then had trainer pants, socks and trousers put on, then got up, walked to chair, and washed and dressed top half.

By this time, it was nearly lunchtime, so I did some emailing and googling, tested my blood sugars - 9.00. Lunch was very nice – salmon bake with potatoes and green beans, then cheese and biscuits (I added one of Dad’s Cornish wafers), and a nice cop of tea.

Went to loo.

Then my organised world was disrupted as they brought another, new bedside table. The nurse emptied mine (that Sian had spent time sorting out yesterday) and basically just shoved things in. Although it is physically bigger (and taller) than the old one, there is less usable space as a third of it is taken up with a lockable top section for storing patient’s meds. I have asked that Sian sort it out again – and I think that they will have to take a load of stuff home.

Then Beccy the physio arrived. I walked to the rehab room and we started first of all doing standing up exercises – 10 on the trot (well, with a couple of sitting down rests), without holding on most of the time. Then the balance exercises of stacking cones, having to stretch to front, right and left. Then side steps. Then moving something from in front of me on the bench to further back, then lifting it up from the bench to on top of a stool on the bench (these are in prep of doing work in the kitchen and stuff). Then side steps, then side step up with one foot to a step then squats, then walking back to my room. Total of around 10 metres. Beccy then got me a stretch band and made a loop for my foot so that I can exercise in my chair.

Quiet afternoon, watching iPlayer, more emailing, and dozing (the latter without meaning to).

Bit of a disappointment with pre supper sugars at 21.0. Not sure why. I had had a couple of sugar free Werthers, but that was it, really. Supper was a ham salad and an apple. Went to loo, and Sian and Juli arrived as I was in there. As I’d told them about the item on the lunch time edition about Pit Stop (one of our CCTV customers) and illegal immigrants found in the back of a refrigerated lorry there at the weekend (loads of police cars, armed response unit, dog unit, ambulances) and an interview with the manager and the ceo, both of whom we know.

Got out of loo, and Sian started sorting my new bedside cabinet out. Lots of clothes and stuff taken home, so I have a couple of days’ worth; I’ll have to remember to ask them to bring more in as and when needed.

No Pit Stop item – other things must have happened in the afternoon. We went down to the drinks machine, and we chatted. Talked about work, the animals, and were then joined by R for a while. Back to room at end of visiting, they gathered the going home stuff and left.

Care assistant came in to ask whether I wanted to go to bed now, and I said no, between 9.30 and 10. I think she was pleased as it meant she didn’t have to see to me but leave me to night staff. However, she did lower my bed and shut the curtains (even though it was still light outside – it’s clearly part of the routine). Talked about knitting – she knits but hates the sewing up (just like me!). Watched Master Chef (that woman’s voice describing the dishes really makes me want to hit her!!) and did some knitting. Sherley came in to confirm home visit on Friday (I think it’s something to do with my notes), and we talked about knitting. She wanted to watch me do some purl as she could do plain but had forgotten purl. She can crochet (which I can’t).

She was called away on Mb walking duty, but hadn’t been warned about her coming into my room, so I had another visit and Mb tried to lie on my bed again. I don’t know what it is about my room and bed!

Another bedside cabinet has just been wheeled past. This has been a regular stream since lunchtime! However, the top section for my meds is still empty.

So, that’s it for today. More physio tomorrow in the afternoon and I hope I get up a bit earlier. I think I will ask to go to the loo after breakfast, even if it just means putting my shoes on and getting back into bed afterwards until it’s my turn to be got up.

Goodnight!
