21st April - CCH - A Quietish Day

Last night was again uneventful. Had a short visit from Mb, but she was reasonably easily diverted back out of the room. Bed time sugars 14.6. I was the last to be put to bed as I’m less trouble than the others, apparently. It was gone 10.30. Settled well onto my non air mattress and it was actually quite comfortable – no ridges. Listened to the Archers and the radio and dropped off. Woke up in middle of night and realised radio still on – that’s used some data allowance. Turned it off and went back to sleep.

Morning sugars 6.5. Dozed until breakfast, and actually was reasonably comfortable when sitting up as the standard mattress is less bulky than the air one. Usual breakfast. Got up and dressed. It‘s amazing how many variations of this there are! Bottom still sore, so more cream.

News has a lot about Victoria Wood – she was the same age as Juli and me, which makes you think – I am lucky. I laughed a lot at the clips they were showing. She really was a very talented and funny woman.

Did some work (checked a lease) and then eventually managed to book a GP appointment. Not with my Dr as he didn’t appear anywhere in the options, but with another Dr I feel comfortable with. You have the option of putting a reason why you want to see the Dr (I’m always tempted to put “not very well”!), but I put “catch up after discharge from hospital. I’m not sure that the 10 mins allowed will be enough, but we’ll give it a go. I seem to be getting conflicting information about who is responsible for what services and how to contact/access them.

Did some reading. Pre lunch sugars 10.5. Lunch: pineapple juice (I don’t know why I drink it when I haven’t ordered it, but I don’t like to waste it) and chicken korma followed by cheese & biscuits (with another of dad’s wafers – only two left now). Went to loo, which served various purposes. Back in chair, more googling as we have been intrigued by the history of the building and Juli found out it used to be the Chippenham Workhouse, so I looked it up. The cupola was apparently either the dining room (presumably for the staff not the inmates) or the chapel. I’m going to do some more digging.

Although I said this was another quiet day, I meant for me. The ward was actually very noisy. Apart from the usual trollies trundling up and down, the phone was ringing a lot, Mr Shoutey was shouting, there were a lot of visitors taking patients for walk and talking loudly.

Despite this, I found myself dropping off while sitting in the chair. I decided that as my bottom was sore and I could do with taking the weight of it (even with a pressure cushion on the chair, it is still pressure if you don’t move), I could do with a nap, and my feet were swollen so could do with being raised. So, multi purpose lying down!

Whilst I was on the bed (I was pleased as I had managed to take my shoes off myself), and was having a cup,of tea, Sharon, the OT came to see if I was all ready for tomorrow. Unfortunately, Julie the staff nurse that I get on very well with, is off sick so won’t be coming, but Annie will. I am not sure who Annie is. I recognise the name, but it must be someone that doesn’t wear a badge or who I only see a badge covered up by an apron and therefore not able to read it. We’ll find out who it is tomorrow! Talked about the visit, that it was just to see how things were and that other pieces of kit can be ordered if necessary. I asked if I’d be able to go home on Saturday, and it really all depends on the carer availability. More bed blocking! I suggested that we might be able to manage without the carers for the weekend (by using private ones or managing without) and she said she didn’t think that was a good idea as they could take the view that in that case I didn’t need carers, or it would bump me right down the priority list. At the moment I am high on the list, so I don’t want to change that.

Went to loo before supper and got back into chair. Nurse came and we discussed meds and my continence situation and what would happen when I get home – there is a continence nurse that works in the community (a specialist district nurse), so they will make a referral. It seems that district nurses are now no longer based at the GP surgery, but centrally organised. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. We’ll see. I ordered some supplies online for delivery tomorrow as I’m not sure what the situation will be over the weekend. Included nappy bags. It really is like being a toddler.

Blood pressure 104/56. Sugars 16.1. Supper: minestrone soup, chicken korma and a nice apple. Just had my cup of tea when Sian and Juli arrived. Sian and I went to the day room loo and she washed my hair (I’d chickened out of doing it myself earlier), then off to the drinks machine. We went on a bit of an adventure to the MIU machine for a change. It seems to me that all the people attending in the early evening are parents with young children. Back, more chat, (about the visit and the alterations to the house), then back to my room where Sian sorted out my clothes for tomorrow and Saturday and took my dirty ones away.

Then they left, and I looked through my info folder to see if the letter from Oxford gave the dates of my other hospital stays, but it does’t specifically. I think we are going to have to have letters from each hospital, unless Chippenham can list them in my discharge letter, but I don’t think so.

Started watching Masterchef. One of the first courses is octopus. It looks disgusting. I really don’t like octopus (or squid).

Might ask to go to bed earlier tonight as busy day tomorrow.

Goodnight!
